Comparing the Ford Bronco to its Fiercest Competition

The off-road SUV market has long been dominated by the legendary Jeep Wrangler. While it has undoubtedly earned its status over the years, a new contender has arrived and is ready to make an immediate impact. The Ford Bronco is back after an extended hiatus for the 2021 model year, and it's generating quite the buzz. With its standard 4x4 capability on every trim level, the 2021 Ford Bronco is looking to knock its strongest competitor off its pedestal right away.

Ford Bronco vs. Jeep Wrangler

There's no beating around the bush, the Ford Bronco is here to directly compete with the Jeep Wrangler, offering Traverse City drivers a better way to take their adventures to the next level. Both vehicles are compact SUVs that emphasize elite off-road capability, offering superior power, torque, driving modes, and open-air cabin experiences. However, when you start to look closer, the Ford Bronco pulls away from the Wrangler in several notable ways.

Performance

Under the hood, both the Bronco and the Wrangler are very capable SUVs. However, the Bronco pulls away in several key areas. The most notable of them is the advanced 4x4 capability known as G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Terrain). This advanced four-wheel-drive system leverages advanced mapping and drive technologies for more capable and confident performance. There are up to seven different driving modes:

  • Normal
  • Eco
  • Sport
  • Slippery and Sand
  • Baja
  • Mud/Ruts
  • Rock Crawl

The advantages of the Ford Bronco also carry over into the engine power. Its standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost gives the Bronco a best-in-class four-cylinder torque rating of 310 pound-feet alongside 270 horsepower. Meanwhile, the Wrangler's V6 engine falls short in the torque output, clocking in at 260 pound-feet.

Meanwhile, the Bronco's available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 provides a horsepower rating that outclasses anything the Wrangler can provide. Opting for this engine gets 310 horsepower, while the Wrangler tops out at 285 horsepower.

Technology

In terms of technology, the introduction of the SYNC 4 infotainment system gives the Bronco and instant leg up. Its competitor, the Jeep Wrangler, returns its standard Uconnect infotainment system, which brings a five-inch touchscreen. The Bronco's SYNC 4 dwarfs this touchscreen, offering an eight-inch model right off the bat. This advantage extends to the available upgrades, as Bronco buyers and lessees can get a 12-inch touchscreen, while the Wrangler tops out at an 8.4-inch model.

Exterior

The exterior of an off-roading SUV has more to do about function than it does fashion. Sure looking good is important, and the Bronco undoubtedly is. Still, the true advantage of the Bronco's exterior lies within the intelligently designed specs that make it outclass the Jeep Wrangler for superior off-road performance. First and foremost, the Ford Bronco gets an available best-in-class 11.6 inches of ground clearance, easily topping the Wrangler's 10.9 inches. From there, the Bronco keeps up its advantage with the following metrics:

  • Ford Bronco Maximum Breakover Angle: 29 degrees – Jeep Wrangler: 27.8 degrees
  • Ford Bronco Maximum Departure Angle: 37.2 degrees – Jeep Wrangler: 37 degrees

On top of that, the Ford Bronco also manages to achieve best-in-class water fording capability of 33.5 inches.
