Ever since you were a kid you've dreamed about self-driving cars. And flying cars. And talking cars.

Maybe a flying, talking car that could drop you off at school, impress all your friends, and then pick you up later. That sounds like kid-you.

For years, self-driving technology has just been an idle fantasy, but recently, many automakers are saying they've done it. At least, they're close.

Ford Motor Company has been researching autonomous vehicles for ten years, and in fact, Ford already has 30 working self-driving cars. These 30 cars are based on the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and run on a third-generation autonomous vehicle development platform. They use LIDAR to scan the area surrounding them up to several hundred feet, so they can "see" traffic and other road obstacles.

You have probably already benefited from these 10 years of autonomous research. Safety features like forward collision warnings, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist are all derived from self-driving vehicle concepts.
