Making sure your brakes are working properly could be the difference between getting into an accident and getting home in Traverse City. That's why it's important to recognize when your Ford needs brake service. Are your brakes braking or breaking? Here are a few things you can look and listen for:
- Worn out brake pads: Brake pads should be at least a quarter of an inch thick. If they're worn down beyond that, it's time to have them replaced.
- Grinding brakes: When your brake pads wear down all the way, your calipers and rotors start rubbing together. That creates a grinding sound any time you use the brakes. You'll probably need to replace both your pads and rotors at this point.
- Squealing brakes: Now, a squealing sound is perfectly normal when it's raining and the road is wet. But if you hear consistent squealing under dry road conditions, it might be a built in indicator that it's time for maintenance.
