Steeped in tradition and rich in history, historically black colleges and universities have a mission to enrich their students' minds, bodies and spirits. Over the past four years, Ford Motor Company has committed to aiding these efforts through the Ford Fund, which is the company's philanthropic arm, and the Ford HBCU Community Challenge.
Ford asks for proposals from teams of HBCUs students around the country and then asks the teams to design a project that addresses critical community needs. The teams then partner with a local non-profit and develop a proposal that furthers the initiative.
Three teams are brought to Dearborn to present their ideas to a panel of Ford executives, who also serve as subject experts and mentors. The winning team earns home $75,000 in scholarships, while the other two receive funding for their programs.
