Ford Escape vs the Competition

See how the Ford Escape compares to the Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee & Kia Sportage

The Ford Escape Beats Its Closest Competition

There is no vehicle segment in greater demand than the compact SUV. With so many auto manufacturers around the world throwing their hats into the ring, the model that manages to stand out above the rest in such a competitive field is a must-have. In this case, the Ford Escape is the model. Drivers around Mesick and Interlochen agree that it is the vehicle of choice for those looking for that much-needed upgrade.

Overview

The Ford Escape is a two-row compact SUV that sits up to five people. Seating is surprisingly spacious despite the Escape's body size, so it makes for a great road tripper even if your passengers are all full-grown adults. It handles exceptionally well, making it friendly for Suttons Bay and Manton drivers who are familiar with the mechanics of a sedan. In addition, it comes loaded with standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, curve control, and driver drowsiness monitoring, which makes the Escape an ideal option for families.

vs Chevy Equinox

The Chevy Equinox is one of the Ford Escape's fiercest competitors. However, upon closer inspection, it's clear that the Escape is the better option. For one thing, the Ford Escape has been given a redesign to welcome in the new decade, resulting in a fresh look that feels like a true upgrade. It's been a couple of years since the Equinox has gotten a redesign, so the difference between it and an older model doesn't feel nearly as substantial.

Another thing that stands out is the fact that the Ford Escape comes standard with more engine power right out of the box than the Chevy Equinox. The Escape's 1.5-liter Inline 3 engine produces 180 horsepower, while the 1.5-liter Inline 4 engine that powers the Equinox comes up short at 170 horsepower. On top of the superior horsepower, the Ford Escape also manages to get a better fuel economy, which isn't something we typically see from engines with more power. The Escape gets 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway while the Equinox has 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

vs Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V provides some stiff competition for the Ford Escape, but the Escape does manage to beat out the CR-V in several important ways. What stands out right away is the fact that the Ford Escape has a more affordable MSRP than the Honda CR-V. With lower monthly payments, Ford Escape owners and lessees have more freedom to enjoy their SUV their way.

The Ford Escape also has a higher power potential than the Honda CR-V. Escape owners and lessees have an available engine option in the form of a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine that maximizes the compact SUV at 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the Honda CR-V only offers a single engine option that tops out at 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque.

vs Jeep Cherokee

When put up against the Jeep Cherokee, the Ford Escape comes out on top when it comes to practicality. The Escape features a higher combined fuel economy of 30 mpg compared to the Cherokee, which gets just 25 mpg. In addition, there is a large disparity when it comes to cargo capacity that falls in favor of the Ford Escape. The Escape has 33.5 cubic feet of space behind its back row, while the Cherokee has just 24.6 cubic feet. Even when you fold down the back row on both models, it's clear that the Escape allows you to do more. It has 65.4 cubic feet compared to the Cherokee's 54.7 cubic feet.

vs Kia Sportage

When put up against the Kia Sportage, the Ford Escape comes out on top in standard features, fuel economy, and cargo capacity. The Ford Escape comes with Ford MyKey, which allows you to program keys with various restricted modes to promote good driving habits in younger drivers. Also, the Ford Escape's 30 mpg combined tops the Kia Sportage's 26 mpg combined while the latter features just 60.4 cubic feet, once again coming up short.
